Protozoa Guide review

Chrysoreinhardia Billard

genus

Description

in Hoffman et al. (2000) Vegetative cells palmelloid, lacking cell walls but surrounded by gelatinous matrix ; chloroplast(s) deeply divided with several lobes; pyrenoids stalked ; zoospores biflagellated , with long anteriorly directed flagellum bearing tripartite tubular hairs (without lateral filaments) and shorter posteriorly directed smooth flagellum ; eyespot absent. Chrysoreinhardia algicola (Reinhard , 1885) Billard in Hoffman et al. (2000) , the type species , is only known from its incomplete original description. The basionym Pulvinaria a/gicola Reinhard is illegitimate because the homonym Pulvinaria Bonorden , 1851 , a fungal name, predates the algal name. REPRESENTATIVE SPECIES: Chrysoreinhardia feldmannii (Bourrelly & Magne) Billard and Fresnel in Hoffmann et al. ( 2 0 0 0) (=Chrysobotrys feldmannii Bourrelly & Magne, 1953; (=Chrysosphaera feldmannii [Bourrelly & Magne] Bourrelly , 1957 ; Pulvinaria feldmannii [Bourrelly & Magne] Billard & Fresnel, 1 9 8 0) (Fig. 6). Cells 4.5 - 7 (11) j..lm in diameter; common in the littoral zone of rocky temperate marine coastlines. See Billard and Fresnel (1980), Billard (1984), Hoffman et al. (2000) . AE C.a. filament with four chloroplasts per cell . C.b. , basal cell ; C.a., apical cell. b. Zoospores. Scale bar=2 J..lm. (From Billard, 1984)
