Pterocystis

genus / CENTROHELIDA / ACANTHOCYSTIDAE

Description

Centroheliozoa with a periplast with an internal layer of tangential plate-scales and external layer of radial sp icules. These spicules consist of a shaft and a thin , membranous basal region which may extend along the shaft and may form a s t a I k- like protrusion at the base of the spicule . The membranous regi on is not clearly differentiated into lateral and basal regions as in Echinocystis. Ten species , all from freshwater. Reference : Mikrjukov (1 997) . 1988 Fi g. 12.
