Mamiella

genus / Mamiellales / MAMIELLACEAE

Description

Bean-shaped flagellates with 2 lateral flagella of nearly equal length inserted in the cavity. Cells contain a single parietal chloroplast with a pyrenoid. An eyespot located on the pyrenoid surface . With numerous muciferous bodies. Cell covered with 2 types of spineless spiderweb-like scales, the scales on the flagella with a central spine , resembling the limuloid flagellar scales of Pyramimonas. One described species; see Moestrup ( 1984). Oolichomastix was described by Manton (1977) based on shadowcast preparations . The 4 described species differ from Mamie/la in scale structure, notably the lack of a spine on the flagellar scales, but the genus appears to be in need of critical rev1s1on (see also Throndsen and Zingone , 1997). Mamie/la gilva (Parke and Rayns) Moestrup , 1 9 8 4 (Figs. 13A, 14). Cells 4-6.5 x 3-4.5 x 3-4 11m . Marine widely distributed flagellate. A .. B spine-scales are from the flagella . B. flagellum in transverse section showing the layer of imbricated scales covering the surface. A=73 ,000x . Stained whole mount (orig .). 8=75 ,000x . (From Moestrup, 1984).
