genus / CHLORODENDRALES / PYCNOCOCCACEAE

Description

Picoplanktonic unicells with single parietal chloroplast and 1-2 pyrenoids. Cell surrounded by wall-like structure . Flagella and eyespot lacking . A flagellated stage has been seen but not examined in detail. It possesses a single flagellum , which arises anteriorly, folds back along the cell , and is directed posteriorly during swimming . The cell has an operculum-like structure in the wall. Pycnococccus provasolii Guillard, 1991 (Fig . 21 ) . Cells spherical, 1.5-4 11m in diameter. This picoplanktonic coccoid cell is known from the North Atlantic and from the Gulf of Mexico (Guillard et al. , 1991 ). It is probably generally overlooked because of its small size.
