Protozoa Guide review

Pseudopedinella,

genus / PEDINELLALES

Description

As Pedinella, but cells free-swimming with trailing stalk that may reach over 100 ~m in length . Three or six chloroplasts, each with a pyrenoid. Ultrastructural descriptions by Z i m- mermann et al. ( 1 984) and Thomsen ( 1 9 8 8). Common in freshwater and marine plankton . Half a dozen species but taxonomy very uncer- tain due to variability . TA Pseudopedinella elastica Skuja (Fig . 6A-C) . Cells 9-15 ~m in diameter. With six chloro- plasts in a tier along the cell periphery . Trail- ing stalk up to c. 140 ~m long . Widely dis t rib- uted in brackish and marine plankton. t C. Transverse section of the cell near the base of the flagellum , showing the very complex system of fibers that interconnects the bases of the six spines and serve in motility . BS , flat body scales; CC, triplets of microtubules ; CH , chl oroplast ; FL, fla - gellum; ML microligament ; PL, plaque; PY , pyre- noid ; SS, spine scales. Not to scale . (From Koutoulis et al. , 1988)
