Homogammina

genus / PSAMMINIDA / PSAMMETTIDAE

Description

Test free , fragile and of brittle to friable consistency. Irregular in shape but tending to be approximately rounded or plate-like in general form . Short, root-like structures and lobate protuberances sometimes developed . Xenophyae are mixture of different-sized planktonic foraminiferal tests, with overall nature and size distribution homogeneous throughout test. Stercomare strands consist of thicker sections connected by narrow necks. Occurrence: Northeast Atlantic , eastern equatorial Pacific ; bathymetric range 2963-4550 m. to at least 7 mm maximum dimension . Fragments usually plate-like and irregular in outline , less commonly lumpy. Xenophyae consist of small juvenile and scattered larger planktonic globigerinacean shells distributed homogeneously throughout test. Stercomare strands arranged in more or less parallel pattern . Other species: Homogammina maculosa Gooday & Tendal, 1988, in 1090 CLASS XENOPHYOPH which test forms rounded lump (Fig. 4); H. crassa Gooday, 1991 . Several undescribed species occur in the eastern equatorial Pacific. Refs. Gooday and Tendal (1988), Gooday (1991 ). Holotype (after Gooday and Tendal , 1988, new print). Scale bar=2 mm . 1988 . Holotype (after Gooday and Tendal , 1988, new print) . Scale=IO mm .
