Galatheammina

genus / PSAMMINIDA / PSAMMINIDAE

Description

Test free and of hard to friable consistency. All described species have totally different test morphologies. Type species has 3-dimensional star-shaped test with 4 branches . In other species test forms compact, rounded lump , irregular plate (sometimes with smaller side plates) , or subtriangular plate with short , root-like bars at base. Inte ri or consists of loose accumulation of xenophyae between which granellare and stercomare interweave. Surface xenophyae form firmly cemented layer. Occurrence : Atlantic , Indian , and Pacific Oceans, bathymetric range EA 1320m-5353 m. Illustrated species (Fig .9) G calcarea (Haeckel , 1889) : Test massive and lumpy , forming rounded , occasionally somwhat irregular masses 6-25 mm diameter. Color white and consistency hard . Xenophyae exclusively calcareous foraminiferal tests. Other species: G discovery Gooday & Tendal , 1988; G. microconcha Gooday & Tendal , 1988 ; G. irregularis Gooday, 1991 ; G. erecta Gooday, 1991 . Several undescribed species occur in the eastern Pacific . Refs . Tendal ( 1972j ; Levin and Thomas ( 1 9 8 8) ; Gooday and Tendal (1988); Gooday (1991 ). Scale bar=IO mm.
