Stannophyllum

genus / STANNOMIDA / STANNOMIDAE

Description

Test free , more or less flexible and varying in consistency from soft and flaccid to stiff but G somewhat elastic . Composed of one or more plate - like parts . Occurrence : One species has been recorded from 3 closely spaced localities in the H abyssal northeast Atlantic but the vast majority of records are from the Indian and Pacific Oceans, 981-6380 m. Refs. Schulze (1907a ,b); Tendal (1972 , 1980a ,b) . H L mm thick , brown in colo r, plate-like with an approximately kidney-shaped outline. Consistency stiff but somewhat elastic. Surface with distinct concentric zones, each 35 mm broad . Linellae L strongly developed , unbranched , 3-4 m thick, forming a distinct surface layer and often occuring in bundles . Xenophyae are mainly radiolarian tests . ther species: There are 13 other described pecies , some of which are poorly known. rady, H. B. 1879.
