Protozoa Guide review

Falcomonas Hill

genus / CRYPTOMONADIDA

Description

The anterior end of cells rounded , gradually tapering to an acute, pointed , and slightly curved posterior end which gives it a comma to teardrop shape (Fig 15) . A furrow extends posteriorly from a vestibulum for approximately half the cell length , and a short sac-like gullet extends beyond the furrow . The periplast appears serrated due to ejectosome chambers located beneath the anterior corners of the raised plates . The inner and outer periplast components consist of hexagonal plates with the outer plates being crystalline and composed of minute subunits . Sometimes heptagonal scales lie on the superficial component plates . The periplastidal compartment contains a single chloroplast with a centrally situated pyrenoid bisected by a periplastidial cytoplasmic tongue , and a nucleomorph located anterior to the pyrenoid . Chloroplasts are blue-green and contain Cr-phycocyanin 569 . Common in marine habitats (Hill , 1990) .
