Description
Triangular or spindle-shaped cell (8-30 1-l m) , often twisted spirally, with the posterior end of the body flattened (Fig. 6) . The 2 nuclei are located anteriorly , and only 3 flagella are inserted at the base of each nucleus. Q-e flagellum is longer than others and used for locomotion. The 2 largely opened cytostomal grooves extend from the flagella emergence to the posterior of the cell. They have a moving contractile vacuole . While swimming , the cell rotates about the longitudinal axis . Cysts have a smooth wall. They may feed osmotrophically and several species live in freshwater rich in organic matter. At least 7 species described . Light microscopic descriptions are given in Klebs (1892), Lemmermann (1910) , Klug (1936) , Liebmann (1938) , Skuja (1956) , van Meel (1982) , Mylnikov (1985, 1991); no ultrastructural study . and Klebs, 1892). The cell has only three flagella inserted at the top of two lateral cytostomal grooves . Bar=10 i-Jm. / 191 0) with only two flagella on each side ; front and lateral views . Bar=1 0 1-1m .
